luftzug.org compiles essential knowledge on ventilation, heating, and cooling – including practical tips on how to improve energy efficiency.

Fans

Air circulation within a room is often desirable. It occurs naturally when heating: the air is warmed by radiators, rises to the ceiling, cools down, and then sinks back to the floor.

Such an airflow is essential for efficient heating. It helps distribute the warm air evenly throughout the room – reducing the need for radiators on every wall.

Depending on the room layout, it may be helpful to support the airflow – for example, with a fan. A fan promotes air mixing and helps distribute heat more evenly.

On the other hand, a fan can create a pleasant breeze in summer. While it doesn't actually cool the air, it improves the perceived temperature. The gentle airflow makes the heat feel less intense.

There are several types of fans, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Pedestal fans deliver powerful, directed airflow, but they can be noisy and require floor space. Ceiling fans are quieter and often more stylish, though installation is more challenging.

Indoor climate

A pleasant indoor climate contributes significantly to a feel-good atmosphere. In order to maintain a good indoor climate, one thing is particularly important: the correct ventilation!

Ventilation fulfils two purposes: on the one hand, fresh air should be let in, and on the other, the cold should be kept out in winter and the heat in summer.

To ensure that this works, we recommend the so-called Shock ventilation. This involves opening the windows fully, but only for a short time. The aim is to exchange the air, but not to let the room (walls or furniture) cool down.

Air stores less heat energy than the walls of a room. Air has a lower specific heat capacity than water or stone, for example [1]. It is therefore easier to heat a room in which the air is cold but the walls and furniture are still warm.

If the windows are only tilted, the air exchange takes longer. This not only cools the air in the room, but also gradually cools other areas, starting with the window frame and window sill.

In addition to correct ventilation, there are numerous product classes that help to improve the indoor climate. You can find out more about indoor climate and the right products here:
